Frequently Asked Questions: Single Zone Wine Coolers
What is a single zone wine cooler?
A single zone wine cooler (or wine fridge) is designed to maintain one consistent temperature throughout the entire internal cabinet. Unlike dual zone models, there is no physical divide inside the fridge. This makes them the perfect, cost-effective solution for wine enthusiasts who predominantly drink one type of wine, or for those looking to cellar and age a mixed collection at a uniform temperature.
Can I store both red and white wine in a single zone wine cooler?
Yes, absolutely! If your goal is long-term storage and ageing, both red and white wines should ideally be kept at the same cellar temperature—typically around 12°C to 14°C. A single zone wine fridge is perfect for this. However, if you are looking to keep both reds and whites at their distinct, ready-to-drink serving temperatures simultaneously, you might want to consider a dual zone wine cooler instead.
What temperature should I set my single zone wine fridge?
The ideal temperature depends entirely on how you plan to use your wine cooler:
- For long-term storage (All Wines): 12°C – 14°C
- For serving White & Sparkling Wine: 7°C – 10°C
- For serving Red Wine: 15°C – 18°C
Can I build a single zone wine cooler into my kitchen cabinets?
This depends on the specific model. We offer both freestanding and built-in/undercounter single zone wine coolers.
- Built-in models have a front-facing ventilation grille, allowing them to be safely installed under kitchen counters without overheating.
- Freestanding models dissipate heat from the back and sides, meaning they need a few inches of clearance and should not be enclosed in cabinetry. Always check the product specifications before purchasing to ensure it fits your kitchen design.
Are single zone wine coolers energy efficient?
Yes. Because they only need to regulate one internal climate, single zone wine coolers are often more energy-efficient than their multi-zone counterparts. Many of the models we stock at Wine Cove feature energy-efficient compressor cooling, LED lighting, and UV-protected double-glazed doors to keep your electricity bills down while protecting your wine from harmful light and temperature fluctuations.
Can I keep my wine cooler in the garage or an unheated outbuilding?
If you plan to keep your wine cooler in a cold UK garage or utility room, you must choose a model equipped with a winter system (or heater). Standard wine coolers can only cool the air; if the ambient room temperature drops below your set temperature (e.g., during a chilly British winter), a winter system will gently warm the cabinet to ensure your wine isn't damaged by the cold.
How many bottles can a single zone wine cooler hold?
Because they don't have a dividing wall or a second set of temperature controls taking up space, single zone coolers often have a slightly larger bottle capacity than dual zone models of the exact same physical size. At Wine Cove, our single zone collection ranges from slimline 150mm undercounter units holding a handful of bottles, to tall, freestanding cabinets capable of storing over 200 bottles.
